The Importance of Mental Silence.

In the modern business world, we are always connected. We check emails during breakfast, listen to podcasts at the gym, and watch videos while waiting for a meeting to start. We do this because we want to avoid boredom. However, experts say this is a mistake. When we are bored, our brain switches to the “Default Mode Network.” This is a state where the brain processes deep thoughts, solves problems, and considers the long-term meaning of our lives.

A famous study at Harvard University showed how much we dislike being alone with our thoughts. Participants sat in a room for 15 minutes with nothing to do. Many chose to give themselves a painful electric shock rather than sit in silence. We avoid boredom because the Default Mode Network makes us think about uncomfortable questions. But these questions are important for our growth. If you ignore these thoughts, you will find it harder to find purpose in your career.

Technology is the main reason we no longer experience boredom. Every time we feel a small amount of silence, we reach for the device in our pocket. This creates a “loop” where we are never truly present. If you continue to check your phone constantly, your level of stress will stay high. To fix this, you must learn the skill of being bored again.

There are simple ways to start. If you leave your phone at home during a walk, you will feel more relaxed after a few minutes. If you stop using social media after 7:00 PM, you will sleep much better. Also, if you keep devices away from the dinner table, you will build stronger relationships with your family and colleagues. In conclusion, if you practice being bored, you will eventually become a more creative and happier person.
