Is having a plan, the same as having a strategy?

Many people think that having a plan is the same as having a strategy. However, in the world of business, they are very different. A plan is a list of activities you want to do. For example, a plan is: “I will open a store, buy products, and hire two employees.” This is just a list of steps.

A strategy is different because it explains how you will win. Strategy is about making choices. If a company chooses a good strategy, it will stand out from the crowd. You cannot do everything for everyone. You must decide who your customers are and why they should choose you instead of your competitor.

For example, think about a coffee shop. If the owner wants to be the cheapest, they will buy low-cost beans and open in a busy train station. But if the owner wants to be a luxury brand, they will offer expensive organic coffee. This second option is a strategy of “differentiation.”

In business, resources like time and money are limited. If you waste your resources on the wrong tasks, your business will fail. A leader must look at the market and find a “niche.” If you find a small niche, you will have less competition. Finally, a strategy must be flexible. The world changes quickly. If the market changes, a good leader will adapt the strategy immediately. Remember: a plan tells you what to do, but a strategy tells you how to win.
