Do you believe there is other life in the universe?

Today we will talk about ET.

Duration: 50 minutes.

Let’s take a look at today’s lesson

This lesson looks at how to talk about Extra Terrestrial life. We will learn some new vocabulary and watch a short video about the subject.

Lesson Key: (L) = Listening (U) = Understanding. (R) = Reading.

How seriously should you take those recent reports of UFOs? Do you believe there is other life in the universe?

Look at the following four points:

  1. The Government Literally Just Admitted It’s Taking UFOs Seriously. Hum….
  2. Scientists are suddenly much more bullish about the possibility of life out there.
“Much more bullish” means, hopeful or confident that something or someone will be successful: optimistic about the future of something or someone.
  3. That “Asteroid” Looks an Awful Lot Like a Rocket Ship. We May Have Just Seen an Actual Flying Saucer. When ‘Oumuamua — the name means “first messenger” in Hawaiian — was discovered floating through the solar system in October, SETI nuts immediately started checking the boxes that suggested the rod-shaped object might be an alien spacecraft of some kind.
  4. The Aliens Are Already Here. This is where the conspiracy theorists get to go nuts. Yes, maybe the aliens are already here, and we just haven’t figured it out yet. They might be taking some time to study us before unveiling themselves, or they have already let themselves be known to certain groups.

Therefore, do aliens exist? Do you agree?

Now some common space idioms.

Once in a blue moon.

When something happens once in a blue moon, it very rarely happens.
“Since my kids were born, I only go out with my friends once in a blue moon.”
“My brother is so good at FIFA I only beat him once in a blue moon.”

Living on another planet.

When you say that someone is living on another planet, you are saying either they do not notice what is happening around them or they are not realistic.
“He’s living on another planet if he thinks he’s going to get £50,000 for his old car.”
“He wasn’t listening to me at all. Sometimes I think he’s living on another planet.”

Come back down to earth.

We come back down to earth when we must start doing something boring/not fun after doing something fun.
“I came back down to earth on my first Monday back in work after my holiday in Spain.”
“She came back down to earth when she got back after the weekend to find she had so many work emails to answer.”

Under the sun.

Everything under the sun is everything that exists or is possible:
“We stayed up all night talking. We must have talked about everything under the sun.”
“She’s highly intelligent and knowledgeable. She can talk about everything under the sun.”

Over the moon.

When you are over the moon, you are incredibly happy about something. This expression is used but these days it is considered a cliché (a phrase or an idea that has been used so often that it no longer has much meaning and is not interesting).
“I was over the moon to find out my wife’s pregnant.”
“He was over the moon with his IELTS score.”

Discussion questions about ET.

  4. What does UFO mean?
  5. Have you seen a UFO or do you know someone who has seen a UFO?
  6. What is your favorite alien from a movie?
  7. Do you think humans will travel to another planet in your lifetime?
  8. How do you think we or aliens will get to other star systems like our own? (If we traveled at the speed of light, the nearest star with planets that we know of is 10.5 years away.)
