● Module 2 – Past Tenses – Talking about Work History Now
Lesson 8: The Past Perfect Continuous.
Learning Objective:
To emphasize the duration or effort put into a task before a specific past turning point.

Lesson 8:
Budget or Burnout.
Budget or Burnout.
You are justifying a budget or a burnout: “We had been working 12-hour days for weeks before the product launch.” It shows the process and effort involved.
The Past Perfect Continuous is used to emphasize the duration or effort put into a task before a specific past turning point.
We use had been + verb-ing.
- Intent: To show how long a continuous action had been happening before another past event.
- Examples:
- I had been trying to contact them for days before they replied. (Eu estava tentando contatá-los há dias antes de eles responderem.)
The company had been losing money for years before the merger. (A empresa estava perdendo dinheiro há anos antes da fusão.)
Now let’s have some Active Practice.
- Emphasis: Turn “I worked on the project” into a sentence showing long duration using “had been”.
- Sentence Creation: Describe a long negotiation you had in the past.
- Correction: “I was working there for 5 years before I quit” (More natural: “I had been working…”).
Answers
1. Emphasis (using past perfect continuous):
- I had been working on the project for a long time when…
2. Sentence Creation:
- I had been negotiating with the client for several weeks before we finally reached an agreement.
3. Correction:
- Original: I was working there for 5 years before I quit.
- Corrected: I had been working there for 5 years before I quit.
✅ Structure reminder:
Subject + had been + verb (-ing)
