How to tackle the 8-minute two-part essay question.

Let’s take a look at today’s lesson

This timed writing exercise requires you to complete two parts for each question in a total of eight minutes. It evaluates your speed in organizing ideas and your clarity in expressing them in English.

Lesson Key: (U) = Understanding. (R) = Reading. (W) = Writing.

1. Understanding the Format.

Each question in this test has two parts that must be completed within 8 minutes total. This is a timed writing exercise designed to assess your ability to organise ideas quickly and express them clearly in English.

PART 1  —  5 minutes
Write an extended response to an open-ended opinion or discussion question.
PART 2  —  3 minutes
Write a focused follow-up response that goes deeper into one aspect of the topic.

2. The Example Question.

Let’s walk through Question 5 together step by step.

PART 1 Question
Should cities invest more in public transportation systems rather than expanding roads for private vehicles? Discuss how urban mobility choices affect the environment, economy, and quality of life for residents.
PART 2 Question
What role can individuals play in reducing traffic congestion and pollution in large cities?

3. Your 8-Minute Game Plan.

Use this timeline every time. With practice, it becomes automatic.

TIMEWHAT TO DO
0:00 – 0:30Read the Part 1 question carefully. Identify the topic and key terms.
0:30 – 1:00Quickly brainstorm 2–3 ideas (one sentence each). Pick the strongest.

7:30 – 8:00Quick review: check spelling, grammar, does it make sense?
Tip: Do not spend more than 30 seconds planning.
One quick idea is better than three unfinished ones.

4. How to Structure Part 1 (5 minutes).

The 3-Paragraph Formula.

ParagraphPurposeTarget length

2Main argument + example3–4 sentences
3Counter-point or conclusion2–3 sentences

Question
Should cities invest more in public transportation systems rather than expanding roads for private vehicles? Discuss how urban mobility choices affect the environment, economy, and quality of life for residents.

Sample Response — Idea.

The overall idea is that improving public transport and encouraging people to use it is the most effective way to reduce traffic and pollution in cities.

Sample Part 1 Response.

PARAGRAPH 1 — INTRODUCTION

Urban transportation has become one of the most urgent challenges in modern cities. In my opinion, investing in public transport is more effective than building new roads because it tackles congestion, pollution, and social inequality simultaneously.

PARAGRAPH 2 — MAIN ARGUMENT + EVIDENCE

From an environmental standpoint, improving public transport reduces the number of private vehicles on the roads, which helps lower carbon emissions. For example, Bogotá has shown that a well-organised bus system can replace millions of car journeys each year. As a result, air quality improves and commuting becomes more efficient for residents.

PARAGRAPH 3 — COUNTER-POINT + CONCLUSION

Some people argue that expanding road infrastructure is necessary to accommodate growing populations. However, new roads often become crowded quickly, a concept known as Induced demand. Therefore, investing in public transport is a more sustainable and effective long-term solution for cities and their populations.

How to Approach Part 2 (3 minutes).

Part 2 is NOT a second essay. It is a focused, direct response to a narrower question. Think of it as your most important point, explained clearly.

The 2-Paragraph Formula for Part 2

  • Paragraph 1: Answer the question directly in 1–2 sentences, then give your key point.
  • Paragraph 2: Expand with a specific example, consequence, or recommendation.

What role can individuals play in reducing traffic congestion and pollution in large cities?

Sample Part 2 Response.

PARAGRAPH 1 — DIRECT ANSWER

Individuals can make a difference by using public transport, cycling, or walking instead of driving, especially for short trips. When many people make these small changes, they can reduce traffic and pollution.

PARAGRAPH 2 — SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

For example, if just twenty percent of commuters switched to buses or the metro, traffic and pollution could decrease significantly. Governments can help by making public transport affordable, frequent, and comfortable.
